Winter Beauty

It's important to note I'm not a winter person. I don't like the cold. This probably comes from too many January lunch hours on the playground behind St. Vincent, climbing across the dunes created by snow plows just being a kid. I'm older now and I feel the ache more often than not.

But days such as yesterday and today are part of the reason I don't live further south, because winter is beautiful.

Thawing two cars from beneath sheets of ice yesterday, I rolled down my windows to test how badly they were frozen only to find panes wrought by wind and water. They might as well be spun sugar, I was so happy to find the windows rolled down without protest to leave the ice in place.

Driving home from work last night, after the first dusting of snow fell onto the trees so each branch seemed woven from white lace.

And driving home at lunch today, so Melissa could take her car. The sun was out, and the ice-laden trees looked as if each was made of glass and blooming with light.
