The books I enjoyed the most were The Dark Tower, Monster and Old Man's War.
King's book finished on a high and saddening note, nicely tying together his own inclusion in the tale. It wasn't as pleasing as the penultimate volume, Song of Susannah, which barreled along like a train at full steam. And I've suddenly realized my book total actually totals 30, because I forgot to record Cell in my list. Monster is probably one of Kellerman's best. Even though I knew some of what happen by the end, he made me care about the characters. It's hard to recall a book he's written that was more well-crafted. As for Scalzi's freshman novel, it opened the doors to brand new universe, one alternatively dark and fascinating, and I'm looking forward to the followups.
The films topping my list are Superman Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Casino Royale.
All three promise better things to come while delivering a satisfying experiencing on their own. The best of the three IMHO was the latter, which is a brilliant re-invention of the James Bond series. As you can tell from the first films on my list I'm a Bond fan, and I'm looking forward to CR's release on DVD to add to my collection.
As for other resolutions ...
2) Try to write at least one page a day. I produced about 530 manuscript pages in 2006, about 132,000 words, on three projects -- Fallen, "Romeo, Unbound" and "Sacrifices."
While I'm pleased with "Romeo, Unbound" (which I sent to Interzone two months ago and on which I'm still waiting for a reply) and "Sacrifices" is coming along well, I can do better than 132k. That's less than two pages a day. I should have finished the latter by now. I've forgotten the rule I set earlier this year: Get the story written, then get it right.
So I'm finishing "Sacrifices" first thing. There are about 5-10 pages left in the tale. After that I'm going to dive into the rewrite on Fallen. I've left it alone long enough to know what it needs.
I didn't publish anything in 2006. I sold "Ye Shall Eat in Haste" in December 2005 to Andy Cox, but Black Static hasn't started publication yet. I expect the magazine should come out with the new year. Which is another reason to complete Fallen with the new year.
Enough said. All normal. All repeaters. Things I need to turn into habits.
