Both literally and figuratively.

Literally, I made my hotel reservations for Context in Columbus yesterday after finding the con hotel was sold out. And apparently had been sold out since September last year, so there wasn't any hope for me booking a room even when I decided to go to the convention earlier this spring. Good news is I'm saving about $30-$40 dollars a night staying across the street at the recommended overflow hotel, which is a Motel 6. Bad news is I'm staying at a Motel 6, and the youngest might not be happy with the trip if there isn't a pool. Doesn't look like there is an outdoor one from what I can tell from Google Earth. :-(

Figuratively, I'm rewriting the last chapter on Fallen again, splitting it into two chapters. While I'm perfectly willing to write long ones -- chapter eleven was 55 pages long and the penultimate chapter, after rewriting it again, will probably run just as long. The average chapter length is 28.7 pages, or about 7,000 words.

I'm not going to suggest there's an optimal length for chapters. Just look at Pratchett as the exception to the rule. A chapter is as long as necessary, and my planned split is thematically necessary. If I keep the changes.

After that, I print out a hard copy and spend a week or two reading it and revising before I'm ready to send it out into the world.

Steve, the con hotel's not sold out -- did you call the 877 number? Unfortunately, the clerks on that line, particularly the night clerks, are clueless.

There's still plenty of room in the con hotel... if anyone hears otherwise, they should call the hotel's local number during the day: 614-846-0300 before 5 p.m.

To get the discounted convention rate, be sure to mention FANACO and/or Context when you call.

My youngest will like that much better. She's looking forward to hanging out at the swimming pool with her mom while I'm doing convention stuff.

I'll cancel my other reservations across the street as soon as I'm confirmed at the con hotel.

Let me know if you run into any more trouble, and I'll let the con's hotel liaison know, and she'll set things right.

Thanks again for your help. Everything is switched from the 6 across the street to the main hotel. It's a bit more (about $20-$30 a night, but it's worth it to keep the youngest happy. :-)
