She's in fine form today. Cruel and demanding and she makes me love her. As I should. I wrote the three-word sentence that sets the stage for the next book.

Playing with titles again. Fallen isn't as attractive as it was when I started. And the short story title sounds awkward when applied to a novel. I know it's possible. Long titles aren't bad, but they need a certain ring.

So, I've got at least four fighting it out, battle royale.

1. Fallen
2. Aftermath
3. Hunters & Hunted*
4. Only The Dead**
5. Ye Shall Eat In Haste***

Now, I know what the muse wants as the title for the sequel: The Sun Also Sets. Which makes me want to try and force something literary as well onto this book. And, truthfully, I can pretty much do anything I want at this point since I'm still writing for myself. I'm still a slave to my muse rather than working for a living. :-)

* -- The evil ampersand.
** -- This is part of a quote, supposedly of Plato, though the provenance is questionable. "Only the dead have seen the end of war."
*** -- The short story title.

Of the five you listed (keeping in mind I don't know the subject of the story at all) I like the sound of Fallen, Aftermath and Only the Dead. Hunters & Hunted sounds nonfiction to me, and Ye Shall Eat in Haste sounds exactly like a short story title as you mention it is. Unless you need to know it for your writing process I wouldn't worry about it. I would say 80% or more of the books I've worked on have had the titles changed from what the author proposed.

That's pretty what I expect. I know it's a process. A title at this point is something I use to name the book for my own sanity/insanity. There's a "tone" I get from the title, whether it's specific to the idea or overall theme.

I'm curious ... what did The Iron Elves start out as for you?
